Ambassadors for Christ

Ambassadors for Christ

Terminology

Generally speaking, an ambassador is a representative of a nation, sent to a foreign land.

In other words, Ambassador is a diplomatic official, heading his or her country's mission to certain international organizations.

An ambassador is a diplomatic agent of the high command, he is a subject of a foreign land and he exemplifies the honor of his home country.

The ambassador’s role is to reflect the official position of the sovereign body that gave him authority.

Biblical Exposition

2 Corinthians 5:20 says “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”

In this verse, the Apostle Paul describes a Christian’s duty as an ambassador of Christ.

Paul’s comment is not imperative, but declarative. He is not saying something that we should be, but rather something that we are.

Being an ambassador is not a status that we aspire to; rather, it is a reality we live in. This reality does carry with it certain implications.

What does it mean to be an ambassador for Christ?

As we go through this world, we represent another Kingdom (John 18:36), and it is our responsibility to reflect the “official position” of heaven.

John 17:16  says “We are in this world, but not of it.” This means we are the residents of the earth, but citizens of heaven.

We are citizens of heaven. We are Christ’s ambassadors, his representatives in this world.

The apostle Paul discusses the ministry of reconciliation as the primary duty of an ambassador. This is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-20).

We are the ambassadors for Christ to carry forward the ministry of reconciliation that involves proclamation, liberation, and restoration.

Mission of an Ambassador

Jesus gives the simple verbal command to the Apostles to preach the gospel, to cast out demons, and to heal the sick (Mark 6:12-13). Therefore, the mission of ambassador is understood in the following ways.

1. Preaching the good news - Proclamation
2. Casting out demons - Liberation
3. Healing the sick - Restoration

Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over unclean spirits.

So they went off and preached repentance, drove out many demons, and they anointed the sick with oil and cured them.

As ambassadors of Christ, let us be inspired and encouraged to preach the word, liberate the imprisoned, and restore the health of people, which is holistic in nature. Amen
